![]() Today I also gave my agreement to marry a man who says he wants nothing more than to care for me and to allow him to cherish me. My bitter regret now must always be born in an endless silence that has broken the hearts of all those I ever loved. ![]() I kept silent because I was afraid to curb the one whom I loved more than any other. I can go through the days, and the motions of daily life, but for what purpose? What good can I bring to those I love, and who would love me in return, if they should know my secret? I did not act with correctness when the ability was within my power to do so. I live, but yet I do not deserve the gift. ![]() What shall be the price of Guilt? Just five letters in a word which buries me with its weight. ![]() Then I may know his feelings on the matter. More than anything I would wish to have his understanding of my regret, but I know it is out of the realm of possibilities until such a time as I meet my maker. ![]() ![]() This standalone urban fantasy is inspired by the Russian folktake “ Vassilisa the Beautiful.” Although Vassa is described as incredibly pale, the rest of the book is populated with characters who are realistically diverse. When things don’t go as planned in BY’s it will take all of Vassa’s wits and Erg’s cunning to escape the store alive and maybe even break whatever curse has been placed on Brooklyn’s nights in Vassa in the Night (2016) by Sarah Porter. Even her enchanted wooden doll, Erg, is willing to behave and keep her sticky fingers to herself this once. Vassa is sure getting out of the store quickly will be easy. ![]() ![]() When her stepsister (Stephanie, naturally) sends Vassa out in the middle of the night for light bulbs the only store that’s still open is the local BY’s. Everyone knows about BY’s, and its owner Babs Yagg, but people do tend to remember a store that dances around on chicken legs and has a habit of decapitating shoplifters. The nights have been acting especially strange as they become longer and longer. ![]() It’s an odd living arrangement to Vassa but no more peculiar than a lot of things in her working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. Chelsea is nice enough but Stephanie might actually hate Vassa–which is fine since it’s mostly mutual. So now she has a stepmother and two stepsisters. Vassa’s father stayed only long enough to settle Vassa with his new wife. Sixteen-year-old Vassa Lisa Lowenstein isn’t sure where she fits in her family or if it even qualifies as a family. ![]() ![]() Both narrate in the first person, both are slow to see the significance of clues, and both stand as a form of surrogate for the reader. Hastings appears to have been introduced by Christie in accordance with the model of Sherlock Holmes's associate, Doctor Watson, to whom he bears a marked resemblance. Moreover, when Christie expanded The Submarine Plans (1923) as The Incredible Theft (1937), she removed Hastings. Of the twenty-two Poirot novels published between 19, he appears in seven. He is not a character in either Death on the Nile or Murder on the Orient Express, the two best-known Poirot novels. In Christie's original writings, however, Hastings is not in every short story or novel. A few were stories into which he had been adapted (for example, Murder in the Mews). Many of the early TV episodes of Agatha Christie's Poirot were adaptations of short stories, in most of which he appeared in print. ![]() Hastings is today strongly associated with Poirot, due more to the television adaptations than to the novels. ![]() ![]() He is also the narrator of several of them. He is first introduced in Christie's 1920 novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles (originally written in 1916) and appears as a character in seven other Poirot novels, including the final one Curtain: Poirot's Last Case (1975), along with a play and many short stories. Hastings, OBE, is a fictional character created by Agatha Christie as the companion-chronicler and best friend of the Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. ![]() ![]() The contemporary poet and playwright Ben Jonson declared that Shakespeare was "not of an age, but for all time". Well, he would wouldn't he, because he has just completed a four-part BBC2 series called In Search of Shakespeare, which attempts to put flesh on the bare bones of Shakespeare's life and show that the world's greatest playwright was very much a product of his time - a society in a state of revolution split between an old-world Catholic sensibility and the Protestant new order, the medieval and the modern. The film-maker and life-long Shakespeare fan Michael Wood thinks that is rubbish. ![]() ![]() In the recent Great Britons series, the legendary theatre director Peter Brook suggested that the biography of Shakespeare didn't matter one jot, it is only the plays that count. ![]() ![]() "Lay one hand on her, and I'll knock you senseless," says Calonice, entering. The magistrate orders someone to arrest Lysistrata, but she tells him that if they arrest her, they will be sorry. ![]() When Lysistrata enters, she tells the men that they do not need crowbars to get through the gates, just common sense. The magistrate fires back that it is the men's own fault because they "encourage them in their wantonness." He discusses the fact that the men encourage a culture of promiscuity and sexual permissiveness, which has created this situation. ![]() A magistrate enters and notes that the women of the community are at it again, "with their partying and their tambourines." The leader of the male chorus tells the magistrate that the women dumped water on him and made it look like he peed himself. ![]() ![]() ![]() Frankly, unless someone made a point of telling you this while giving you the book, you would not know it.Ī warning, though: this is a book about estranged spouses who are very much bitter against each other. ![]() However, I see now, though I didn’t realize it when I first started seeing this book praised pretty much everywhere online, is that it is Ms Thomas’ debut novel. The writing, the sense of period, the language, the characterization–they are all so very polished, this reader would have readily believe that Ms Thomas had published a dozen titles prior to the release of Private Arrangements. This book has been languishing in the old TBR mountain range for YEARS–seriously, at least four or five–which, it turns out, is a freaking crying shame. This month’s theme, “Lovely Rita” (aka, RITA nominated books) This slightly tardy review is my contribution to this month’s TBR Challenge, hosted by the wonderful SLWendy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He would later describe his family's background as "lower-upper-middle class."Īt the age of six, Blair was sent to a small Anglican parish school in Henley-on-Thames, which his sister had attended before him. ![]() Eric had an older sister named Marjorie, and a younger sister named Avril. The law of supply and demand shows that with the release of a new model, the demand for the previous body style goes down. Whether you agree with that statement or not, basic economics backs this up. However, many people also believe that a new body style would diminish the value of the 5th Gen. It’s a huge letdown for the community to see the 4Runner be seemingly neglected. Meanwhile, the company has continued to update every other vehicle in its lineup including the Toyota Prius which low-key has me thinking about trading in the 4Runner (just kidding). That means after 13 years of production, the Toyota 4Runner has only received minor improvements. For many, this marks yet another year of no major body style changes or huge technology improvements.
